Technical specialties used in a wide range of industries
Oxo oils (HS9, LS9, LS13)
Our oxo oils are distillation sections from the production of C9 and C13 oxo alcohols. Their applications range from fluids for metal processing, lubricants, release agents; solvents and processing aids in leather and textile processing; as well as in industrial water treatment and industrial defoamers to fuel components in diesel and gasoline fuels.
What are oxo oils and what they are used for?
Evonik offers the oxo oils HS9, LS9 (C8) and LS13 (C12):
- Oxo oil HS9 is a complex mixture of oxygenates (mainly oxo alcohols, ethers, aldol condensates, acetals) with "self-emulsifying" properties. It is used, among other things, as a solvent (e.g. for technical coatings, in metal, leather and textile processing, and in industrial water treatment), as a component of industrial defoamers and as a blending component in diesel fuels.
- Oxo oil LS 9 is a complex mixture of predominantly branched C8 alkanes and alkenes.
- Oxo oil LS 13 is a complex mixture of predominantly branched C12 alkanes and alkenes. Oxo oils LS9 and LS 13 are used as intermediates (for the production of solvents) and as blending components in gasoline (LS9) and diesel (LS13) fuels.
A few technical details:
Due to the raw materials used and the production process, the presence of heavy metals, chlorine and sulfur in all our oxo oils can be safely eliminated.
Our oxo oil HS 9 has a relatively high boiling temperature, a relatively high flash point and a low pour point.
Our oxo oil LS 9 features a relatively narrow boiling range at low boiling temperature, low flash point and very low pour point, while our oxo oil LS 13 offers a relatively narrow boiling range at medium boiling temperature, medium flash point and very low pour point.

Where are the oxo oils produced and how are they transported?
In our state-of-the-art C4 Verbund, we process various exclusively C4-based raw material flows from steam crackers and refineries, such as crude-C4 (so-called CC4) or FCC-C4 (fluid catalytic cracking-C4). The high C4 flow purity of the intermediates enables the production of particularly high-quality derivatives. The use of special purification and processing technologies safely eliminates undesired impurities. Our continuous production ensures the constant and reliable availability of our products. Our oxo oils are manufactured in continuous production processes at Evonik's largest production location in Marl, Germany. All oxo oils are available in tank trucks as well as in tank containers.
