Successful mentor meeting of the Evonik Stiftung at Marl Chemical Park: Young researchers of the future

  • Evonik Stiftung has awarded four doctoral scholarships this year
  • This year's funding priority: "Innovative approaches in catalysis".
  • Exchange and promotion of young scientists - financially and personally

Professor Dr. Robert Franke, mentor of the scholarship holders, Head of Hydroformylation Research at Performance Intermediates and Associate Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the Ruhr University Bochum, has invited the young scientists to a colloquium at the Chemical Park in Marl. "As a scientist, it is my duty to pass on my knowledge to future generations. I particularly appreciate the intensive discussions with my students at the university and hope that I can also give the scholarship holders from the Evonik Stiftung important impulses for their research work. It is also a great opportunity to present Evonik's research work to ambitious scientists," emphasized Prof. Dr. Franke.

At the scientific colloquium there were not only interesting lectures by Evonik, for example on the challenges in catalysis research by Prof. Dr. Robert Franke or on "Digital Marketing Strategies" by Michael Thol, Head of Market Segment Fuel Components at Performance Intermediates. Scholarship holders Christian Heider, TU Dortmund, Jennifer Börger, University of Hamburg, Julia Büker, Ruhr University Bochum, and Dimitrios Ioannis Tzaras, TU Berlin, also presented the current status of their research work. In the afternoon, Prof. Dr. Franke gave an exclusive insight into large-scale industry: During a tour through the Marl Chemical Park, he also showed his laboratories and pilot plants. This not only gave the scholarship holders a good overview of hydroformylation research at Performance Intermediates, but also enabled them to exchange ideas and network intensively with Evonik colleagues.

"I was very pleased to receive the invitation to the mentors' meeting of the Evonik Stiftung, as both the lecture by Prof. Dr. Franke and the insight into the research of the other scholarship holders were very interesting and educational. Furthermore, the scientific discussions after the lectures enabled me to gain many new ideas for my own research, which I will continue to implement in the laboratory in the future. I personally found the presentation on Mr. Thol's diverse marketing strategies interesting in terms of how business aspects can be linked with research. During my tour of the Performance Intermediates laboratory, I was impressed by the development of basic research and the dimensions it can reach," Christian Heider summarized the meeting.

The scholarship of the Evonik Stiftung exclusively supports scientific theses, in particular doctoral theses. In addition to the financial support, the program is characterized by the content-related and personal support of the scholarship holders by a mentor. Scholarships are only awarded within the framework of an annual funding priority proposed by Innovation Management.
