What are Liquefied petroleum gases? 

Liquefied petroleum gas consists of one or more easily liquefiable hydrocarbon compounds with three or four carbon atoms. These short-chain hydrocarbons such as butane, propane and their mixtures remain liquid at room temperature and low compression (<10 bar). LPG can be extracted directly from natural gas processing plants or through further processing of crude oil at refineries.

One of our main fields of activity is the processing of crude oil derivatives. Over the years we have become one of the major producers of C4-based materials for the rubber, plastics and specialty chemicals markets. Nowadays, Evonik offers in its product range iso-Butane, n-Butane and several mixtures for diverse applications. As a colorless, inflammable gas, the different types of LPG have a characteristic odor that is easily condensable under pressure.

LPG for cooling systems, propellants & alkylation units

There are four kinds of liquefied petroleum gas. By their similar, but not completely identical properties they can be used in various applications.

For fuel: LPG, such as various types of Butane, can be used in the fuel industry e.g. as blend components. The conversion of isobutane into an alkylate takes place in petroleum refineries to transform low-molecular-weight molecules into a larger weight-molecule. Isobutane can be used in the automotive industry in the form of alkylate petrol. Which is obtained in a specific alkylation process. This significantly reduces the emission of harmful exhaust gas such as carbon monoxide, particles, and hydrocarbons.  

For maleic anhydride: In the field of synthetic resins and polymers, n-Butane provides an important contribution to maleic acid synthesis by catalytic oxidation processes. This contributes to the greater tear strength of plastics. Maleic anhydride can be used in several industries such as construction, automotive or agrochemical. Furthermore, it appears as an important copolymer for the production of lubricants.

As a refrigerant: Isobutane can be used in small amounts for cooling and freezing systems in refrigerators. The liquid gas is increasingly becoming an eco-friendly alternative. Instead of using the ozone-depleting Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as a refrigerant, iso-Butane R600a can result in better energy efficiency, which is reflected in lower operating costs.

As a propellant: A highly purified mixture of n- and iso-Butane and Propane can be used as an aerosol propellant in the cosmetic industry e.g. for shaving foam or deodorant. Furthermore, it can be applied in further end products such as insect spray, spray paint or packaging. These mixtures are summarized under the brand name DRIVOSOL®. These products can individually be adapted to your requirements and applications by flexible pressure settings in a range from 1.2 to 7.8 bar.

For the chemical industry: LPG can also be used in chemical decomposition in the production of short-chain hydrocarbons such as methane or ethane.

 

Production & logistics of n-Butane, iso-butane & its mixtures

With our state-of-the-art C4Verbund, we are processing different raw material flow such as Crack C4 or FCC-C4 (Fluid Catalytic Cracking -C4) from steam crackers or refineries. In order to be even better positioned on the LPG market and to guarantee a continuous supply, we produce our LPG at two different locations in Europe. The natural gases iso-butane and butane-mix can be shipped directly out of our production plant in Antwerp, Belgium while our other LPG n-butane, as well as the natural gas iso-butane and its mixtures are produced in Marl, Germany.

We support you individually with our offered logistic options such as tank cars, rail tank cars, containers or barges.
