#18 – The Christmas tree

A Christmas tradition that has gone global.

The Christmas tree is a decorated fir tree, which is set up at Christmas time in the living room at private homes or in public places. The Christmas tree is decorated with light chains, candles, crystal balls, tinsel, angels or other figures. From the 19th century onwards this Christmas tradition has spread out across the world.

The most popular song about the Christmas tree is based on the German song “O Tannenbaum” written by August Zamack in the year 1819:

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
How are thy leaves so verdant!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How are thy leaves so verdant!
Not only in the summertime,
But even in winter is thy prime.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How are thy leaves so verdant!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure doth thou bring me!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure doth thou bring me!
For every year the Christmas tree,
Brings to us all both joy and glee.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure doth thou bring me!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Thy candles shine out brightly!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Thy candles shine out brightly!
Each bough doth hold its tiny light,
That makes each toy to sparkle bright.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Thy candles shine out brightly!
